Canada is a large place filled with many diverse and exciting activities. This country is the second largest in the world in terms of total area, and all of that room holds some very unique and original things to do. The country is full of activities that range from sports, to bird watching, to shopping. With ten provinces and three territories, the different places and cultures to see are endless.

To understand the Canadian culture you must first understand a little of its history. Canada was founded as a union of both British and French colonies. These colonies cohabitated harmoniously until Canada decided to declare her independence from Britain. In a process that took over 100 years, Canada finally gained independence in 1982. The country of Canada is a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy.

One of Canada's most recognized pastimes is that of sports. The official national sports are hockey in the winter and lacrosse during the summer. Canada's national pastime is the game of hockey. The six largest metropolitan areas in Canada all have their own leagues in the National Hockey League. There are the Montreal Canadians, the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Calgary Flames, the Edmonton Oilers, and the Vancouver Canucks. Taking in hockey games and learning to play the game are popular things to do for many Canadians during the winter time.

Canada is also known for its amazing outdoor adventures. Fishing is another pastime that is popular in Canada. There are many different places to fish, and different ways to angle. You can try ice fishing, charter a boat and fish in either the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean or set up at one of the many lakes in the country. Hunting brings thousands of visitors to Canada each year. Hunting for elk, moose, bear, and other large game provides a challenge to hunters and Canada's climate is perfect for housing large trophy game.

Shopping in Canada is another attraction that brings many visitors each year. There are the traditional malls and outlet shops, but the real treasure of Canadian shopping are the individually owned shops that can be found in some of the more artsy districts in large cities. These shops could hold antiques, unique art, couture clothing, and so much more. There are great shops and shopping centers in all of the large metropolitan areas of Canada.

With the 2010 Winter Olympic Games coming to Vancouver, there are sure to be even more visitors and exciting attractions coming to the country. Visiting Canada can appeal to all members of the family. There is hunting and fishing, amusement parks, museums, shopping, and much more. The provinces and territories of Canada are all unique and each has their own brand of Canadian fun just waiting to be had.
