Description of United StatesPosted By: Natalie Lapacek on 16 November, 2006With large metropolitan areas, peaceful rural communities, and a variety of geographical features, the United States of America is a place that offers something for every visitor to enjoy. United States' cities like New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Chicago tend to draw in large amounts of visitors because of the wide array of activities and famous architecture. Besides the soaring skyscrapers, sports games, and Broadway shows of the cities, the United States is the home of an array of natural wonders like Niagara Falls, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Lakes, and the Appalachian Mountains. Besides the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii are included in the country as well. As Alaska is the northernmost state and Hawaii is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, these destinations also offer a unique experience for any visitor. In every state and region of the 3.7 million square foot United States, you're bound to find something to suit any visitor's taste. In United States cities, you'll find many activities and landmarks that are major parts of American culture. Probably one of the most popular destinations of the United States in New York City, nicknamed "The Big Apple." This city is home to many important American businesses, organizations, and landmarks. The Statue of Liberty, or Lady Liberty, is one of the main sights of not only New York City but of the entire country itself. The United Nations is also located in this city, making it a meeting place for countries from around the world. Other major destinations of the city include Manhattan, Madison Square Garden, Wall Street, and many others. Another popular American vacation destination is Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California. These parks, themed after the creations of the famous American animator Walt Disney, draw in millions of visitors each year. Because of the country's extensive involvement in film, Hollywood is another metropolitan area that draws both U.S. residents and visitors. Known as "the home of the stars," this district of Los Angeles, California, is where movies were first made and is the home of the annual Academy Awards. Due to the worldwide popularity of Country Western music and Southern Cuisine, the southern United States also has many popular destinations for visitors. Cities like Nashville, Tennessee, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Atlanta, Georgia, are representative of distinctive Southern American culture and attract several visitors at any time of the year. While United States pop culture draws many visitors to its urban areas, individuals from around the world come to this country to see its vast geographical features. The most majestic terrain is arguably in the western continental United States, where the Rocky Mountains are located. The Rocky Mountains are great not only for sightseeing but also for outdoor recreation like skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. The Midwestern United States' terrain consists mostly of plains, but in this region are the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, which are both major waterways of the country. The eastern United States has the Appalachian Mountains, which also offers great scenery and varied terrain. While Alaska and Hawaii are home to exciting metropolitan areas like Juneau and Honolulu, the main tourism draw of these states are the geographical highlights. Alaska is home to mountains, volcanoes, and arctic tundra, making the state an interesting experience for nature lovers. Hawaii offers an equally majestic experience with its tropical climate and beautiful ocean shorelines. All this and more make the United States a fantastic place to vacation. Whatever state or region you decide to visit in the United States, you'll find diversity, rich culture, and geographic beauty everywhere you go. |
