The state of Alabama is rich in history and culture. Almost everything in the state is somehow affected by its past, and it is this reverence to history and tradition that makes this state the cornucopia of culture that it is.

Alabama was first founded in 1702 by the French in the city of Mobile. The state passed hands from the French, to the British, to the Spaniards, until finally it was claimed by the United States. Alabama was the 22nd state inducted into the Union in 1819.

Alabama is known for its Southern culture, foods, and activities. This state is where you can find loads of belly sticking food, straight from the oven. There is also beautiful architecture and many sports venues that draw visitors to the state.

This state has the unique recognition of holding several groups and fraternities dedicated to the consumption and study of food in Alabama. 'The Year of Alabama Food' is one of these groups. On their website you can learn the 100 foods you must eat before you die, find recipes, and learn when and where local food festivals will be occurring. Love of food is one of the things that the South is known for, and Alabama is no exception.

If you are planning to tour the many historical antebellum plantations and Victorian mansions of Alabama, you might want to reserve a good chunk of your vacation for the purpose. These architectural phenomenons are often over 150 years old and perfectly preserved. When touring these homes you can often see antiques and artifacts belonging to the families who once lived there. Anyone who enjoys history will love the rich historical significance that these homes and their inhabitants had on our culture today.

Sports are huge in Alabama, especially football. The University of Alabama's Crimson Tide has been dominating the college football scene for too many years to count. Youngsters in this state begin playing early, and dream of one day playing on one of the premier college teams in the state. Football isn't the only popular sport in Alabama, though. Baseball, soccer, and track are all popular with the youth and overall population of the state.

There are so many things to do in both the rural and more metropolitan areas of Alabama. In the rural areas you can learn of the history and culture of the state, while in the city you can tour museums, attend sports events, and participate in a seemingly endless stream of activities.
