The great state of Arkansas was first explored by de Soto in the late 1500s. It was named for one of the many Native American tribes that called the land home. On June 15, 1836, Arkansas was inducted into the United States of America. It was the 25th state to be inducted. All was peaceful in Arkansas until the years leading up to the Civil War. When Arkansas was brought into the Union it was designated a slave state. Arkansas finally seceded from the Union on May 6, 1861. It was one of the last states to do so.

Arkansas is well known for its outdoor activities. There are many great outdoor opportunities in this state. There is hunting, fishing, rock climbing, rafting, hiking, and so much more. The abundance of wildlife and game makes hunting a popular pastime here. With acres of forest land deer, turkey, and other trophy prizes roam freely. The lakes and rivers of Arkansas are stocked with many kinds of fish and aquatic animals. There are grasslands, rock formations, caverns and caves. Spelunking is popular in Arkansas due to the number of caves and caverns in the area. There is a great variety and abundance of crystals and gemstones found in Arkansas, so panning and searching for these items is a popular activity. There are many species of wildlife to be found in Arkansas, so exploring the state parks and animal refuges is also a popular pastime.

On rainy days, or the sweltering days of summer, people from Arkansas often travel indoors. While Arkansas is predominantly known for its outdoor activities, there are many indoor attractions. Arkansas has theaters, art galleries, museums, Civil War battlefields, historic sites, and many national parks. Several Civil War battlefields call Arkansas home. While the state wasn't a hotbed of battles, several were fought on the Arkansas countryside. Visiting these sights can be poignant and moving. On the grounds there are museums dedicated to the memory of the battle and the soldiers who fought there.

While traveling in Arkansas there is a wealth of things to do. Whether you enjoy outdoor activities or are more of an inside person, there is most definitely something for you in this state. From museums to national parks, Arkansas is full of amazing things to do and see. Swim in the lakes, hike in the parks, and explore the museums. There is no shortage of possibilities for fun while staying in Arkansas.
