Colorado, located in the western United States, is a state with an estimated population of 4,665,177. This state is considered to be part of three different United States regions: the Mountain region, the Southwestern region, and Central region. While the state of Colorado has its urban areas, like the capital city of Denver, people often travel to this state to take in the scenery and engage in outdoor sports and recreation.
Because of its different types of terrain, Colorado offers a vast array of sightseeing and recreational opportunities. The Southern Rocky Mountains and Front Range are located in the western part of the state with well known peaks like Longs Peak, Mount Evans, Pikes Peak, and Spanish Peak. The Continental Divide is west of the Front Range, and to the west of the Continental Divide is the Western Slope. The Rockies in Colorado have 54 peaks that are at least 14,000 feet high. Southern Colorado is home to the San Juan Mountains and the Colorado Plateau. Throughout all of Colorado, you'll find these mountain ranges along with basins that are like deserts, plateaus, and the grasslands of the Great Plains. With so much variety, you'll find something different in each portion of the state.
While Colorado is primarily a place known for its beautiful natural environment, the state has busy metropolitan areas as well. Colorado's most populated cities include Denver, Colorado Springs, Lakewood, and Aurora. Some other notable towns in Colorado with lower populations include Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Leadville, and Vail. Colorado's many ski resorts bring in a large amount of tourists during the winter season. Some of the best known ski resorts in Colorado are Copper Mountain, Winter Park, Telluride, Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Aspen Snowmass.
With its diverse topography and colorful history, one can only expect that Colorado is home to many National Parks. Visitors to Colorado love to visit these places during all seasons to see the wonder of nature and to explore the rich history of this western state:
