With a population of 12,419,293, Illinois is the fifth most populous state in the nation and the most populous in the Midwest. This state borders Lake Michigan in the northeast, Indiana on the east, Kentucky on the southeast, Missouri and Iowa on the west, and Wisconsin on the north. Because of its central location, Illinois has been a hub for travelers for 150 years. This state has also been officially nicknamed the "Land of Lincoln," as it is where Abraham Lincoln was raised.

One thing that stands out about the state of Illinois is its economic diversity. In Illinois, one will find rural areas, large and small cities, suburbs, and farms. In the northeastern portion is Chicago, which makes up most of the state's population. In fact, two out three Illinois residents live in the Chicagoland area. Chicago and its suburbs draw both visitors and residents with its world famous attractions and booming economy.

If one travels southward and westward from Chicago, however, one will find less populous prairies. This central portion of Illinois is made up of farmlands, small towns, and mid-sized cities. Major cities located in Illinois' central portion include Peoria, Decatur, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, and the state capital, Springfield.

In southern Illinois, one will find that the topography of the state becomes a bit more diverse. While the central portion of Illinois consists of many soy bean and corn fields, this part of the state produces more of a variety of crops, including cotton in the past. The landscape here is a bit more rugged than the prairies to the north, and this portion has a few small scale oil deposits and coal mines. Besides the agricultural opportunities, southern Illinois is also well populated, as many Saint Louis suburbs are located here. The Illinois portion of Saint Louis suburbs, comprised of 600,000 people, is known as the Metro-East.
