Located in the heart of the Midwest, Iowa is known for it's crop produciton and farming, but doesn't have a large reputation as a vacation destination. This makes it a hidden gem in the United States. Unbeknownst to the majority of the population Iowa is home to numerous museums, galleries, theaters, theme parks, and historical sites that will make any vacation great.

Out of the many museums found in Iowa, two of the most popular are the Battle Hill Museum of Natural History and the Kinney Pioneer Museum. Battle Hill is full of natural wonders and is home to more than 4,000 artifacts. There are fossils, rock formations, and even a replica of a limestone cave with a maze of trails. Kinney's Pioneer Museum is home to a replica log cabin and blacksmith's shop. Here you can see fossils, browse clothing, and see old-fashioned dolls. There is also a more modern soda shop and several antique cars available for viewing.

Whether the populace of America chooses to believe it or not, the small state of Iowa is very much a benefactor of the arts. There are at least a dozen large playhouses and theaters in the state that show everything from plays, to concerts, to dance recitals. The Des Moines Playhouse was founded in 1919 and has been showing hit plays ever since. They also focus on the art of theater, holding lessons, and having a special children's theater. The Des Moines Symphony is a professional symphony that plays many times throughout the year. They symphony was established in 1937 and has been delighting Iowa residents with their magical harmonies and rhythms for almost 70 years.

Iowa also has its share of historic homes and historical sites. Terrace Hill was built by Iowa's first millionaire. The Victorian style home was built in 1869 and is now the official home of Iowa's governors. It is situated on an 8 and a half acre Victorian replica village and offers beautiful grounds and views. The Salisbury House boasts an astounding 42 rooms! Built in the 1920s, the home features many wonderful artifacts, including furniture that dates back to the 1500s. The home is now open for tours and has a working museum.

From theater to old homes, the attractions and activities in Iowa are numerous. Whether you are looking to learn something new or want to enjoy a tour of a home older than the hills, you surely have the opportunity in Iowa.
