The Old Line State offers anything a visitor could ask for and more with any number of exciting vacation experiences for travelers. Those not willing to take part in the state sport of jousting or in a reenactment of decisive battles of the Civil War can enjoy a full score of leisure activities anytime of the year.
America?s Sailing Capital, Annapolis, offers the best of small towns and big cities all in one friendly location. The downtown area offers a wide array of shopping in one-of-a-kind boutiques. For those that haven?t shopped enough visit Arundel Mills, one of the largest malls in the country. Annapolis is also home to more 18th-century buildings than anywhere else in the United States. From the burning of the Peggy Stewart tea ship to Kunta Kinte?s arrival to the country for the first time, the city played host to a number of important historical events.
The most populated city is Baltimore, with over 640,000 people calling it home. The city?s extensive art and history museums are one of its greatest attractions. Visit the Maryland Historical Society to read the original manuscript of ?The Star-Spangled Banner? by native Francis Scott Key or catch a game with the Baltimore Orioles.
With over 4,000 miles of navigable shoreline, the Chesapeake Bay is some of the most relaxing and enjoyable sailing a visitor may enjoy. Fall is the favored time to sail the bay, due to warmer water and brisker wind. Spring?s only fault is cooler temperatures and the summer will give a lighter wind in your sail.
Maryland has three distinct climate regions, due in large part to the Chesapeake Bay. Because of this, there is always something to do during any of the four seasons. Take the family sailing during the summer or skiing in the winter. There are a large number of trails to be hiked and locations for Civil War buffs, including Antietam National Battlefield. With the wide variety of seasonal activities, it will take several trips to Maryland to fully experience the Old Line State.
