Omaha, NE
Holding the honored title of the largest city in the state of Nebraska, Omaha has a lot to offer its visitors with a population of almost 400,000. Rich in culture and a history that includes the birth of beloved U.S. President Gerald Ford, who was born as Leslie Lynch King, Jr. along with Malcolm X (Malcolm Little). Both of these historical icons were born here and neither stayed past one year of age due to family situations.
Music
Omaha has a colorful history in the music forms of R&B along with jazz with homegrown talents such as Preston Love, Buddy Miles and Wynonie Harris. "Omaha Blues" by Big Joe Williams references this character-filled city. The city is also a regular stop for numerous Kansas City bands. Most recently, Omaha is known for being the birthplace of the very successful rock band 311 and Saddle Creek Records.
Sports
While in Omaha, guests should visit the Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium which is home to a minor-league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, the Omaha Royals. Annually, this is where the NCAA College World series has been hosted in mid-June since 1950. For football fans there's the Omaha Beef indoor football team that shows off its skill at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Ice Hockey is another popular spectator sport in this city with three area teams, the Omaha Lancers play at the Mid-America Center, the Qwest Center Omaha features the University of Nebraska Mavericks and the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knighs who play at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
Attractions
Area attractions in Omaha include Nebraska's largest amusement and water park, Fun Plex. This amusement park features waterslides, go-karts, batting cages, tilt-a-whirt, a wave pool and much, much more. For an educational experience, take the kids to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo which spans 110 acres and has rare exhibits such as lowland gorillas, white tigers and snow leopards. The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo has a petting zoo for smaller children to enjoy as well. For more classically tuned visitors, the Orpheum Theater is the stop of choice. This 2600-seat theater was built in 1927 and hosts opera and symphony performances along with various other performing arts groups.
Shopping
Shopping in Omaha is an adventure all to itself with every type of shop you can imagine or would like to visit. From jewelers, souvenirs and bridal wear to keepsakes and recreation, Omaha has something for everyone. The Crossroads Mall is a good choice with it's complete range of shops to suit every taste, including Dillard's, Sears, Bath & Body Works and Younkers among the many.
Dining
For an evening out, be sure to check out one of numerous restaurants in the city. Omaha offers live music clubs, pubs, French food, small cafe's, steakhouses, even Czech food if you get in the mood. Along with the aforementioned restaurants, there are also a number of other types of restaurants to keep your mouth watering throughout your visit to Omaha.
