Home to America's largest metropolis along with a number of small towns and natural wonders, New York is truly a state of diversity. While most people associate New York most closely with NYC, there is much more here than the Big Apple. New York features a number of distinct regions.

West of Hudson Valley are the Catskill Mountains, while the scenic Thousand Islands lye just on the Canadian-US border. Here visitors can catch a glimpse of the prolific Niagara Falls while not even having to leave to country.

Eastern New York is home to Long Island, which attracts many visitors with its excellent beaches and wineries. Other places to note in Long Island are harbor towns such as Port Jefferson, where a variety of restaurants and small businesses thrive in a bohemian atmosphere. Various parts of New York City are also accessable from the Long Island area, so it makes for an excellent day trip for those who are staying in the city area or vice versa.

Also a few hours away from NYC is the uniquely named Finger Lakes region, named so for a series of beautiful lakes that can be found within the region. Finger Lakes is also home to the famed Cayuga Wine Trail, featuring numerous wine tasting stops along the way. The wine in this area is so well known that the region has often been called the east coast's version of Napa Valley in California.

For lovers of the outdoors, the Adirondack mountains feature some of the best outdoor adventure activities in New York, from hiking to skiing to ice and rock climbing. It is also home to Champlain Valley, considered to be the "sixth" Great Lake along with the famed Lake Placid. There are a number of popular vacation spots located along the lakes in Adirondack.

Don't forget to see Hudson Valley as well, home to a wealth of New York's history. Visitors can tour the original Sleepy Hallow here, along with the famous Hudson Bay. During the weekends, a ferry runs through the Bay from Hudson Valley to take visitors to New York City.

Last, New York City is the number one reason people come to visit the state of New York. Being one of the world's cultural epicenters, it is really no surprise. Simply listing the attractions and sights of the city alone would take far longer than what this article is capable of doing. New York is not only home to some of the world's most well known monuments like the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, and the Metropolitan Opera, but also a number of movie stars, writers, and cultural figures. New York is divided into five burroughs or neighborhoods that you have probably heard of before: The Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Seeing just one of these areas could easily consume an entire week or more.

With it's incredible history, cities and landscapes, New York is a state for all seasons, peoples and ideas.
