As the largest city in the state of Texas and the fourth-largest city in the United States, Houston stands an economic, cultural, and entertainment center in Southeast Texas. Houston is known nationally as a headquarters of aeronautics & medical research, and is second only to New York City in terms of Fortune 500 companies that are headquartered in the city.
"Space City" is home to the Lyndon B. Houston is home to several professional teams, including Major League Baseball's Houston Astros, the National Football League's Houston Texans, the National Basketball Association's Houston Rockets, the Women's National Basketball Association's Houston Comets, and Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo. Because of the wide breadth of sports featured here, Houston is considered by many to rank among the top cities for professional sports, and Houston fans are second-to-none in terms of loyalty and enthusiasm. Major sports venues include Minute Maid Park, Reliant Stadium, and the Reliant Astrodome.
Major annual events in the city include the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, which draws the top artists in pop, rock, & country music and the top rodeo athletes in the country each year. The three-week event takes place early each spring, and draws nearly 2 million visitors each year. Houston is also home to the largest mall in Texas at the Galleria, a shopper's paradise that features major retailers as well as local favorites. In addition to its own premiere attractions and events, the beaches of Galveston Island are just a short drive from Houston, where attractions like Moody Gardens and shopping on the Strand highlight life on the coast.
