Lush green Appalachian Mountains, the 200,000 acre Shenandoah Valley and rolling ocean tides are only part of the reasons for people to visit Virginia. The small quaint towns like Martinsburg give a traveler the feeling of being surrounded by peace and quiet for those who just want to escape the city. Beach lovers will enjoy the Atlantic's shorelines and sports of volleyball, fishing, and boating that can be found there.

The Shenandoah Valley and Appalachian Mountains are beautifully sculpted regions of national importance for their natural gorgeous landscapes and spectacular vistas. Campsites in these areas are some of the most popular in the United States with hundreds of people flocking from all over to spend a couple of nights out under the stars. Families with kids can enjoy the Splashdown Water Park in Manassas or Busch Gardens in Williamsburg as well as the thrill of a safari at the Virginia Safari Park. Other activities for children include a Virginia Zoo in Norfolk, or the Bogey's Sport Park and the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond.

People that are looking for a beach vacation will be pleasantly accommodated on Virginia Beach or one of the other coastal towns, where you can bask in the sun, splash in the waves or rent a boat and go out on the ocean for a short voyage. Horse lovers will be interested in the islands of Chincoteague and Assateague where the Pony Penning Day was made famous by the books by Marguerite Henry. While in Chincoteague you can ride on an actual Chincoteague pony.

Virginia is unmatched in historical significance for being the first place settled, site of many important Civil War battles and home to the most Presidents. Colonial Williamsburg, the largest living history museum, provides the perfect command center for a tour of the historical aspects of Virginia. With Jamestown and Yorktown within minutes, you will find there is always something more to learn in the Williamsburg area about our nation's history. Or you can travel north to Manassas and enjoy the history of the Civil War in a park for the two battles of Manassas.

First time visitors to Virginia will probably want to do everything there is to do, but the best way to get a taste of Virginia is to focus on a few day long activities and soak in the atmosphere, especially with any of the historic sites. So take your time, you will probably be back this way.
