Planning ski trip, whitewater adventure, hiking, national park visits, and more could never be easier in a state filled with so much. The scenic countryside offers a beautiful change of pace from the urban metropolises found elsewhere.
During the American Civil War, West Virginia broke away from Virginia and was admitted as its own state in 1863 After Reconstruction, development of the state's mineral resources benefited them more than any other single economic activity. Weather in West Virginia is varied throughout the state, but pleasant nonetheless. The central part of the state is home to warm summers and cold, snowy winters. The southwestern part of the state has a lower elevation which gives it a subtropical climate with milder winters. The large Appalachians to the west help protect the state from harsher weather from the Midwest.
